Sep 01, 2010 LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Producer Mark Canton is coming back swinging at James Cameron after the "Avatar" director insulted his new "Piranha" sequel.
In a Vanity Fair interview that hit the web earlier this week, Cameron dissed "Piranha 3D," which he briefly worked on: "I worked on Piranha 2 (sic) for a few days and got fired off of it; I don't put it on my official filmography. So there's no sort of fond connection for me whatsoever.
"In fact, I would go even farther and say that ... I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but that is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like 'Friday the 13th' 3D.'" (The film's actual name was Friday the 13th Part 3.")
Sniped back Canton Tuesday, "Cameron consistently celebrates himself out as though he is a team of one. His comments are ridiculous, self-serving and insulting to those of us who are not caught up in serving his ego and his rhetoric."
He also challenged Cameron to watch the movie on the big screen.
"On opening weekend (August 20-22), I was in a Los Angeles theater with a number of today's great filmmakers including J.J. Abrams ("Star Trek"), who actually had nothing short of the fabulous, fun 3D experience that the movie provides," Canton said.
